What's wrong with my PHP here?

I'm trying to get an SMS-style manifest for Nova 2. I put the Nova 1 manifest into the /application/views/_base_override/main/pages folder, and am modifying it. More specifically:

Code: Select all
<tr class="fontSmall hidden <?php echo $char['crew_type'] . $display;?>">
                        <td class="col_15"></td>
                        <td colspan="2" class="bold col_260"><?php echo $pos['name'];?></td>
                        <td class="col_150 align_center"><?php echo img($char['rank_img']);?></td>
                        <td class="col_260 bold">
                           <?php echo $char['name'];?>
                           <br /><?php echo text_output($char['char_species'])?>&nbsp;<?php echo text_output($char['char_gender'])?>

                           <?php if ($char['crew_type'] == 'npc'): ?>
                              <br /><strong><?php echo text_output($label['npc'], 'span', 'gray');?></strong>
                           <?php elseif ($char['crew_type'] == 'inactive'): ?>
                              <br /><strong><?php echo text_output($label['inactive'], 'span', 'gray');?></strong>
                           <?php endif; ?>
                        </td>
                        <td class="col_75 align_right">
                           <?php echo anchor('personnel/character/'. $char['char_id'], img($char['combadge']), array('class' => 'bold image'));?>
                        </td>
                     </tr>

My added code being:

Code: Select all
<br /><?php echo text_output($char['char_species'])?>&nbsp;<?php echo text_output($char['char_gender'])?>

Right below the character name. However, this is just giving me a bunch of line breaks as can be seen here. What's it supposed to be?

Moved to the right forum

Check the error logs since errors are suppressed by default. That might tell you what's going on.

I can't do that, I don't have access to the server backend. Just FTP. I'll try and contact the webmaster about it.

Nova's logs are stored in the application/logs directory, so you don't need your host to do anything. Just open up the directory and look at the latest log.

Re: What's wrong with my PHP here?

It says:

ERROR - 2012-06-08 11:20:55 --> Severity: Notice --> Undefined index: species
ERROR - 2012-06-08 11:20:55 --> Severity: Notice --> Undefined index: gender

I sort of figured that one out by myself, so I switched to char_species and char_gender, which seemed to work fine in the famous manifest mod, but:

ERROR - 2012-06-08 11:26:49 --> Severity: Notice --> Undefined index: char_species
ERROR - 2012-06-08 11:26:49 --> Severity: Notice --> Undefined index: char_gender

How do I find out what the correct index for these fields is?

Re: What's wrong with my PHP here?

Those indices don't exist in Nova by default, you have to add them and fill them with the data you want.
