Hello, Anodynia!

This humble Notepad & HTML'er comes to learn more about SMS than simply how to spell it.

I CO a Trek simm in Obsidian Fleet (USS Yorktown).
After two years, my faithful players finally come forward to tell me they hate play-by-forums.
The peasants are storming the castle with torches and pitchforks, demanding SMS.

I have a godaddy linux site, which has served me wonderfully.
They support phpbb forums, so I won't need help setting up a companion forum there.
(Even if my players don't like forums, Iiiiiieeeee do.
They're incredibly flexible, allowing for discussions, libraries, etc.)

Godaddy doesn't support SMS, however, so I will be on my own.
That's fine. As long as I have a decent set of instructions, I shouldn't need little hand holding... I hope.

If anyone can have mercy upon a dialup user (my bandwidth is like trying to snorkel through a drinking straw),
a quick pointer to a "Start Here" would be invaluable to me. I'll look for FAQ's & stuff.

[Edit] Hmmm! Looks like what I might want to be using is that Nova.

Anyway, that be me!
Glad to meet you all.
T

Greetings and welcome to the Anodyne forums.

I'd like to start off by saying that I agree with your crew in the fact that I prefer SMS vs forum posting. Though obviously I am a little biased when it comes down to it.

Getting SMS 2.6 up and running is actually quite user friendly. Having just recently completed an install (sometime in the near future I hope to get back into simming), I can provide you with a simple walkthrough:

1) Upload all the files for SMS into your root folder or subdirectory.
2) Make sure you have created a MySQL database from within the cPanel of your GoDaddy hosting account.
3) Make sure you know or have written down all of the database connection information (You will need this for the installation process).
4) Point your browser to the web address to where you have SMS installed (i.e.: http://www.yoursite.com) and the install script should kick in automatically.
5) Follow the step by step instructions to install SMS, entering your database information when prompted.

If all went well after step 5 you should be up and running, and then its simply a matter of configuring SMS from within the SMS control panel to suit the needs of your sim.

Once again, welcome to the forums and feel free to ask us any questions should you have them.

Thank you thank you!

Heya! Safe to say, you probably know a lot more about SMS than even I do.

The Kuro-chan knows "of" it and that is about it. =p

And yes I know the feel of "Notepad and HTML" since that is what I end up doing to get my site going. However, since my site is about graphics and not a database, it gets the job done quite nicely.

Welcome to the forums mate!

I have to agree on the SMS vs. Forums thing. I think it is better by comparison.

But that's from several years of simming. :)
